Additional Notes and Tips. BMW Alpina B7 Official Photos and Info – News – Car and Driver. Similar to this year’s field of presidential candidates, the upper echelon of luxury sedans offers a plethora of establishment choices seasoned by a few outsiders. Against veritable four- door stalwarts such as the Mercedes- Benz S- class, Jaguar XJ, Audi A8, and BMW 7- series, stand fringe offerings—Porsche’s Panamera, Maserati’s Quattroporte—and special variants of more mainstream models, your AMG S6. Audi S8s, for example. Part of the latter group is the Alpina B7, which is all- new this year after its donor vehicle, BMW’s 7- series, was retooled. High- performance M versions of the 2- series, 3- series, 4- series, 5- series, 6- series, and even the X5 and X6 utes exist, but BMW’s biggest four- door, the 7- series, is left out. For those not familiar with Alpina—something Alpina might consider a win for its exclusivity—it is a tuner that enjoys an exceptionally close relationship with BMW, despite technically being a stand- alone manufacturer that offers hotted- up versions of regular BMW models. When it comes to the B7, Alpina’s formula involves adding dash with a subtle dose of flash. With a new 7- series having arrived for the 2. Alpina remixed the B7 recipe and applied it to the updated body. This latest B7 tosses that to the wind, juicing the 7. V- 8 a full 1. 55 horsepower to a flat 6. Credit for the B7’s might goes to new turbochargers, a unique Alpina intake and intercooler setup, special Mahle pistons, an Alpina dual- mode exhaust, and 2. This BMW fitment guide lists the different BMW wheel sizes that will fit each BMW model along with the tyre size and wheel offset. Our chart contains BMW's current model range in addition to previous models manufactured in the past. We have created as comprehensive a chart as possible, but if your vehicle is missing from the list and you need advice please contact our technical team who will be happy to offer support and advice. We have extensive knowledge and experience with BMW wheel fitting and should be able to help. The data on our guide is taken from BMW's factory options and recognised tuning companies; these are wheel and tyres sizes that would have been available to order on your vehicle during production or have been tested by companies like Alpina, Hartge and AC Schnitzer. By using these sizes you are able to fit larger/smaller wheels, or wheels of a different style, whilst ensuring correct fit and safety – which is paramount. We only supply our customers with genuine BMW wheels manufactured by or for BMW rather than replicas or copies. You can refer to this fitment guide when buying new BMW wheels to identify the range of wheel sizes that will fit your BMW and the dimensions that the wheel needs to be in order to fit correctly. Our web configurator provides an automated approach to identifying wheels for your BMW, however you should refer to this chart if you are browsing our product range manually. In addition to helping with wheel sizes this chart also lists tyre sizes for each wheel – this is useful when purchasing a set of replacement tyres or adding tyres to an order for new wheels. Inspired by literature from authors like Edgar Allan Poe, Bram Stoker, and Mary Shelley, horror films have existed for more than a century. The macabre and the supernatural are frequent themes. Horror may also overlap with the fantasy, supernatural fiction and thriller genres. Horror films often deal with viewers' nightmares, fears, revulsions and terror of the unknown. Plots within the horror genre often involve the intrusion of an evil force, event, or personage into the everyday world. Prevalent elements include ghosts, extraterrestrials, vampires, werewolves, demons, satanism, gore, torture, vicious animals, evil witches, monsters, zombies, cannibals, psychopaths, natural or man- made disasters, and serial killers. Carol Anne, who is the five- year- old child, can sense the supernatural spirits that have taken over her house. These bizarre spirits come from the graveyard, which the house is built on. Candyman, for example, examined the link between an invented urban legend and the realistic horror of the racism that produced its villain. In the Mouth of Madness took a more literal approach, as its protagonist actually hopped from the real world into a novel created by the madman he was hired to track down. Two main problems pushed horror backward during this period: firstly, the horror genre wore itself out with the proliferation of nonstop slasher and gore films in the eighties. Secondly, the adolescent audience which feasted on the blood and morbidity of the previous decade grew up, and the replacement audience for films of an imaginative nature were being captured instead by the explosion of science- fiction and fantasy films, courtesy of the special effects possibilities with advances made in computer- generated imagery. Peter Jackson's Braindead (1. Dead Alive in the U. The 2. 5 Best Horror Films Of The 2. Century So Far. By the pricking of my thumbs, a holiday- themed list feature this way comes. Yep, All Hallow’s Eve is almost upon us, and while the temptation to do some kind of “Before I Go To Sleep“- themed feature was a great one, we thought we should put together something appropriately spooky to get you in the mood for tomorrow night’s festivities. So, during a break from making our costumes for the annual Playlist Halloween party (popular choices this year: the Babadook, Kevin Feige, Alexander from “Alexander and The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day,” box- office receipts for “Sin City 2,” a Gamer. Gater), we’ve been considering the state of recent horror. We’re now fifteen years into the new millennium, and while the horror genre is as ever responsible for more dross than most, it’s also been an exciting time for scary movie fans, with a new wave of filmmakers emerging from all around the world with smart new takes on how to make you scream. So after much deliberation/arguing, we’ve picked out the 2. Take a look at our picks below, and let us know your picks in the comments. Eventually, the studio started to produce different types of films, and “Orphan,” an original chiller co- produced by Leonardo Di. Caprio, might be the company’s very best film. Helmed by Spanish stylist Jaume Collet- Serra, the film is an endlessly fascinating take on the “evil child” horror sub- genre, this time centered around a young couple (played by Vera Farmiga and Peter Sarsgaard) who, following the stillborn birth of their third child, decide to adopt an odd Russian girl named Esther (a haunting Isabelle Fuhrman). At 1. 23 minutes, the movie is a decidedly slow burn, but it ramps up to a rare (and essentially unguessable) twist that doesn’t totally discredit the rest of the movie. Instead, it makes the climax, set in Connecticut but turned, thanks to Jeff Cutter. Even if you’re not a fan of this particular genre sub- set, it’s hard to argue with the effective and stylistic verve of “Orphan.” And even before the twist blows your mind, chances are you’ll already be shaken up. For the most part, the results of movies like “Pulse,” “The Grudge,” “The Eye” and “One Missed Call” were disastrous, but the first of the batch, “The Ring,” was against the odds excellent. Directed by a pre- ”Pirates of the Caribbean” Gore Verbinski, the film follows roughly the same plot as the original, with a journalist and single mother (Naomi Watts, who’d just broken out in “Mulholland Drive”) discovering that her niece has died a mysterious death, her body frozen in a position of horror. Digging into the case, she finds that the death may have been linked to the urban legend of a mysterious video tape that causes the death of anyone who watches it after seven days. It’s probably not superior to the 1. Verbinski retains much of what worked about Hideo Nakata’s film, and beautifully amps up the atmosphere, with an almost painterly feel to the photography by Bojan Bazelli, and a halting, jolting score by Hans Zimmer. And though the shock of the film’s ending was probably lessened for those who’d seen the original, those coming to the remake fresh almost certainly never forgot it. On the strength of this clever, funny, subversive home invasion movie and their latest “The Guest,” which sadly all but disappeared from theaters due to stiff competition in a very crowded market, they’re two upstart genre filmmakers whose careers you’ll want to follow. Without question what they do next is an exciting prospect (a remake of the excellent “I Saw the Devil,” the Korean revenge film to end all Korean revenge films, was recently announced), but for now we have “You’re Next,” currently available to stream on Netflix. It’s a thrill ride, a reminder of when horror films were fun, and almost never disappoints. It stars a rogue’s gallery of former mumblecore elites and current/past indie mainstays —Joe Swanberg, Amy Seimetz, Ti West, AJ Bowan, Kate Lyn Sheil, Larry Fessenden— all upstaged by the film’s MVP, Sharni Vinson, who takes what must have already been a great character on the page and infuses it with humor, bloodlust and urgency. We’ll leave it for you to discover what we’re getting at, because “You’re Next” works best when characters turn the tables and expectations are upended. As directed by David Robert Mitchell (“Myth of the American Sleepover“), “It Follows” is many things —it’s a fairly on- the- nose metaphor for the dangers of promiscuity, a superb modern campfire tale, and a loose imagining of what would happen if the cast of “The Breakfast Club” banded together to fight a horrifying otherworldly evil. It is also scary as hell. Mitchell captures the action in a series of queasy long takes, a welcome reprieve from the quick- cutting assault that helped define the “torture porn” slate of films, so the viewer is waiting for something terrible to happen instead of being bludgeoned with it; it’s artful and eerie at the same time. The mythology that Mitchell sets up makes a whimsical kind of sense (hopefully it will be left mercifully unexplored, should sequels be in the cards) and Maika Monroe (who starred in another killer genre film from this year, “The Guest“) is one of the most compelling female horror icons since Jamie Lee Curtis in “Halloween.” She is a girl whose fumbling one night stand ends up haunting her —literally. The result was that “Berberian Sound Studio,” his horror- tinged follow- up, was very much under- the- radar when it arrived, but the film successfully broke open the skulls of pretty much everyone that saw it. Influenced by both David Lynch and classic giallo horror, the film starred the great Toby Jones as Gilderoy, a sound engineer who travels to Italy to work on a horror picture called “The Equestrian Vortex” (the film’s director takes exception at calling it a horror film: one imagines Strickland might say the same). Gilderoy begins his meticulous work but finds himself rapidly unraveling. It’s in part a horror film about the effect of horror films, and that we barely see anything of the film- within- the- film only lets your imagination play havoc with the unpleasant squelches and screams that are being created by the sonic wizard (and Jones is absolutely terrific in the part). Pure genre fans might come away disappointed with the lack of jump- scares or actual gore, but this is a truer kind of horror, one that reaches in and shakes your skeleton through your ears. Cosmic Horror Story - TV Tropes. A universe where humanity is preyed upon as a mere plaything for all kinds of inconceivable horrors, and all our ideals are naught but cruel illusions; a universe which was once ruled by such eldritch abominations from the depths of space long ago. Nor are they dead; they merely wait, and soon they shall wake. They shall return to rule this world, and all our grandest achievementsshall have been in vain. For all our blind hubris we are but mice in the wainscoting, making merry while the cat's away—but even today, the world is more dangerous than we may know. Demons gibber in the tunnels beneath your feet. Parasites and worms slither unseen in whatever food or drink you dare put into your mouth. Ghosts hover unseen and unheard around you, discerning and mocking your every thought and secret. The vile essence of an alien disease lurks in the recesses of your own family tree, a genetic time bomb just waitingtogooff.. Lovecraft, pioneer, Trope Maker, and Trope Codifier of the Cosmic Horror Story. This type of fiction doesn't just scare you with big, ugly monsters—though it can certainly have them—it depresses you with the fatalistic implication of being insignificantly powerless before such vast, unknowable and fundamentally alien entities. On the Sliding Scale of Idealism vs. Cynicism, it sometimes lies near the cynical Despair Event Horizon. We're talking a Big Bad who is capable of destroying humanity, planet Earth, the universe, or all three and doing so with very little, if any, preparation and/or intent, and with about as much effort as it takes you to swat a mosquito that's landed on your arm. Are the motivations of the antagonist difficult to explain using human terms? Are the antagonist or its minions so alien in appearance or mentality that simply being near them or even seeing them is enough to drive a human to madness? Are the antagonist or its minions indescribable - - literally? If it isn't, the work is more likely to be Lovecraft Lite. Very likely to use Paranoia Fuel and invoke an atmosphere similar to Room 1. A Despair Event Horizon or a Downer Ending can be used to add to the depressing atmosphere. Compare/contrast with Gothic Horror (on which prose the first Cosmic Horror Stories, like those from Lovecraft himself, borrowed), Dark Fantasy, Crapsack World, Mind Screw and Through the Eyes of Madness. Lovecraft, a Cosmic Horror Story need not refer to the Mythos or borrow from its imagery. Lovecraft Lite goes a step further than that by either giving the setting some genuine hope or playing it for laughs. Examples open/close all folders Anime & Manga Berserk operates somewhere between this and Lovecraft Lite. Ruled by an Eldritch Abomination that can effortlessly crush realities just in passing? Body Horror, check, and You Can't Fight Fate, check. However, the antagonists, far from inhuman, are all- too human and their motivations are far from impersonal. That Eldritch Abomination is nothing more or less than humanity's collective unconscious made manifest. And the protagonist and his True Companions are iron- willed Determinators who staunchly refuse to give in to the Despair Event Horizon or Go Mad from the Revelation. Final judgment on whether the story counts as this or Lovecraft Lite will likely hinge on its ending.. You will never have the slightest idea. The manga features one attempt at an explanation, but it really doesn't help make anything better: the Multiverse has a virtually infinite number of parallel universes constantly springing from slight divergences, but this apparently puts a strain on existence, and so the giant robot battles happen to be a . It's a whole new level of cosmic insignificance. If you die, you're faced with the binary options of continuing to reincarnate or being discarded and deleted from the system. The celestial bureaucracy decides which fate you get by subjecting you to an arbitrary, sadistic Secret Test of Character. The whole system exists because the people running it are so detached from humanity that it's the only way they can think of to assess the human soul, and they neither know nor particularly care when they get it wrong, to the point where the higher- ups have had to bring in an assistant to mitigate the Quindecim staff's frequent fuckups and teach them about how humans work. Devilman - thanks to humans being bastardskilling the only people protecting them from demons it leads to them being left alone against the enemy. At the very end it's implied that humans have been all killed, leaving only demons and devilmen and then everybody except Satan dies. Oh and God is an gigantic Eldritch Abomination that kills anybody who gets too close it. AMON makes it even worse - God has put the entire world on a time loop so all humans and demons live and die for nothing over and over, just to make Satan suffer the loss of his beloved repeatedly for all eternity. At the end of the series, after poisoned worlds, endless Mind Rapes, and a total invasion and subjugation of a city, the D- Reaper cannot be defeated, at least not conventionally, only regressed to a less threatening form. The fact that the main writer is a contributor to the Cthulhu Mythos will not shock anyone who's watched the series, nor will the fact that he also wrote Serial Experiments Lain. Exactly what it is, is left up in the air, and its intentions may or may not be malevolent. Later specimens appear to be evolving toward interfacing with humanity, which mainly just causes Mind Rape of various types. Various factions within the series vie for the opportunity to take down the Angels in the way they deem most appropriate, with the winner being the creation of equally nightmarish humongous mecha, but such a last resort requires the chosen pilots to be mentally ill and psychologically tortured in order for them to function. The war only results in increasingly horrifying circumstances and adversaries, while a key benefactor of the protagonists is actually a Lovecraft- style Ancient Conspiracy who were always planning to use the Angels to resurrect an even worse alien God and cause The End of the World as We Know It. In Their Own Image. In the end, the apocalypse is so incomprehensible it even also makes us real life humans go mad from the revelation. A town is built on top of an impossible spiral structure, which proceeds to cause increasingly horrible things to happen before absorbing the entire town. It has done so countless times before and will do so countless times again. Donald tries out for a singing competition organized by a renowned musician, and gets successfully recruited by having his voice altered by an apparent twin of this musician. It's later revealed that the entire world is actually the dream of Ar- Finn, a primordial cephalophoid monster which slumbers in an ancient city at the bottom of the sea. The two twins are manifestations of the monster's conflicting subconscious desires to either continue sleeping or wake up (which Donald's voice will make it do). When the creature does exactly that, the rest of the world vanishes as it no longer creates the world- dream, and everything in its vicinity shapes itself into its image, resulting in Donald and his nephews growing tentacles and stick eyes. It's eventually put back to sleep, but the story ends on a rather dark note as Donald contemplates everybody's existence as mere parts of the creature's imagination. Three episodes into American Horror Story Season 6, and a clear pattern of callbacks is starting to emerge. FX and its marketing may be calling this the Roanoke. The year is 1. 96. Read about creepy ghosts, Japanese urban legends and classic tales of fear. A SCARY STORY for Halloween. Baba Yaga is one of the most famous and frightening witches in all literature. She lives in a strange hut on hens legs. American Horror Story: Roanoke . The giddy frights, the scary delights. Unwilling to accept that this spooky holiday had indeed passed three days ago, . It was like an hour- long haunted corn maze. There were so many scary things! With the hangovers of Halloween still lingering in our livers, it seems fitting to look at the scariest elements of American Horror Story: Roanoke . Being Trapped: Whether it was Audrey (Sarah Paulson), Monet (Angela Bassett) and Lee (Adina Porter) held hostage by the Polks or Dominic (Cuba Gooding Jr) and Shelby (Lily Rabe) finding themselves housebound by in the Roanoke manse the episode removed a lot of options for the remaining survivors of this bloody reality show. Options give hope, and these people were faced with literal and figurative but mainly literal dead ends! What's worse than feeling a will to survive while having one's agency taken away? In the case of admitted husband murderer Lee being a captive was made all the more frustrating by enduring the dimmest of the Polks: Cain Polk (Finn Wittrock). It's one thing to be trapped by a superior, but it's another to know the one thing standing between you and and the rest of life is a fussy, horndog screen junkie with the IQ of a jar of Christmas ears. Angela Bassett, American Horror Story: Roanoke. Being Chased: Perhaps worse than being stuck without any course of action is the moment right before being trapped or right after escaping imprisonment. The kind of moment Dominic and Shelby experienced while dodging wall scramblers, Piggy Men, and torch- bearing ghost mobs. The moment where there's hope for escape but just as much of a chance that certain death is right around the corner. Sure, having a shot at life might work out for the better, but in Dominic and Shelby's case, the adrenaline- fueled transitional state led the duo right back to the very point they'd started out. Which is to say they got to experience all the highs of potential victory before landing right smack dab in an even more terrible position than they'd started out with. Forced Mutilation: Alright, so what my favorite British actress endured was basically what I feel every time I go to the dentist, which so far in life has been a grand total of six. Forget being trapped or chased, the forced tooth extraction and de- fleshing of Audrey and Lee were worse than the previous two items combined. Between the rusty equipment of the Polks, the suspense of imminent death, and the visceral pain, the forced mutilation these two endured was proof that the end was near whether they liked it or not. Finn Wittrock, Robin Weigert, Adina Porter, American Horrror Story: Roanoke. Hillbillies: For city folk, the strange ways of the hillbilly are enough to make our skin crawl. The Polks were scary because they represent the most human form of monstrous violence without being supernatural. They get a kick out of murder. And they want to inflict all this on more distinguished trespassers. They're basically the closest thing in this show to zombies. Still all these things don't amount to a jar of Christmas ears in the abstract, but when a proper lady like Audrey Tindall must acknowledge that Mama and her ilk are cut from the same genetic cloth (give or take a few incestuous chromosomes), it's unsettling. We don't like seeing the potential for terribleness in ourselves. I'm sorry, but we don't! The Chens: OK, so literal creepy crawler contortionists that don't utter a peep and can stick to any surface regardless of the laws of gravity? These ghouls were tailor- made for scares. Admittedly the fun kind of scares, but that's why they've landed in the penultimate spot here. With their spider- like agility and belief in teamwork, the Chens are the closest thing American Horror Story: Roanoke has to actual monsters. Not gruesome impalers or swine- headed executioners, but the sort of otherworldly force that reduces you (me) into a screaming teenaged girl in a haunted house, out past curfew on a school night. Sarah Paulson, American Horror Story: Roanoke. Being Self- Centered: While Audrey brought the funniest jokes in the season, such as her thoughts on Shelby's death (. The morality lesson for Roanoke might as well be . Dominic could have had his spin- off. Rory and Audrey would be happily married. On that note, if none of the participants in this show had egos they'd all be sipping lattes in Santa Monica. Then again we wouldn't have seen Audrey use her dying words to talk about herself, and all the wonderful roles she had in store for her fans. Point is, while there's nothing wrong with being personally proactive in this world, sometimes selfishness can lead to some truly terrifying places. American Horror Story: Roanoke airs Wednesdays at 1. American Horror Story Season 6 Premiere Recap. After months of mystifying adverts from FX and a more secretive- than- usual production staff, the American Horror Story Season 6 premiere finally revealed the season’s subtitle: “My Roanoke Nightmare.” Not sure if it was really worth the network going out of its way to hide the premise, as there is nothing particularly shocking about it. What is different about this season is the structure. It is put together like “Making a Murderer” or “Dateline”: talking head interviews with the “real” subjects talking about what happened and how they felt, interspersed with “re- enactments” to illustrate the story.“My Roanoke Nightmare” is the story of Matt and Shelby Miller, an interracial married couple who have the perfect life. They live in Los Angeles. She is a yoga instructor; he is a pharmaceutical sales rep. When he gets a promotion and she finds out she is pregnant, the couple go out and celebrate. They run into a gang, whose members play the “knock- out” game with Matt and leave him unconscious on the street. At the hospital, the doctors are worried because they don’t know when he might wake up. Shelby insists on seeing him, and as soon as she holds his hand, he starts to wake. It’s nothing supernatural; they just have that strong of a bond. But the stress of the situation causes Shelby to miscarry, and the two no longer feel safe in Los Angeles. They head east, to Matt’s home in North Carolina. While having the “perfect day” in the woods, they come across a beautiful old farmhouse that was built in 1. It has grand, curving staircases and big round windows that look like eyes. The couple are instantly in love but doubt they can afford it. They attend the auction, where the only other bidders are a trio of rednecks. The Millers win the auction for $4. Matt loves the country life, but senses Shelby’s reluctance. They are having sex when they hear a growling, generic “scary noise” and loud banging. Outside, Matt discovers torn- apart garbage cans, which he initially attributes to bears or raccoons. Then a trash can sails through the air at him, and Matt thinks the hillbillies are screwing with him. He has faced discrimination in the past, especially living in the south, and the fact that he is black and his wife is white certainly doesn’t win over racists. The next day, Matt is out running errands when it begins to hail. Shelby, home alone, goes out to watch the hail and discovers that it isn’t tiny chunks of ice – it is hailing human teeth. By the time Matt comes home, the teeth are gone and he convinces his wife that it was just regular hail – he drove through the storm himself. She feels foolish. Shelby is unconcerned when Matt has to go out of town for work for a few days. He will only be two hours away, and secretly, she is looking forward to some alone time. One night, after dinner, she takes her glass of wine down the hall and thinks she sees two young women walking the same hall. They are gone in an instant and Shelby shakes it off. She goes outside to relax in the hot tub (though it is not on, so I don’t know what the point of it is). Suddenly a hand appears and tries to drown her. She is scared, choking, then suddenly it stops. By the time she can see, whoever it was is gone. She calls the cops, then her husband, who rushes home. Shelby says her attackers wore old costumes of some sort, and carried pitchforks and torches. The officer who took her statement said there was no evidence of another person being there, and suggests Shelby was seeing things. Matt suggests it was the racist hillbillies, and the officer promises to go check up on them, then suggests Matt gets a gun. Matt feels like he is being condescended to. That night, as Shelby sleeps, Matt again goes to investigate Generic Spooky Noises. He finds a bloody, dead pig on their porch, and decides that is proof that the hillbillies were trying to scare them away. Matt doesn’t tell Shelby; he just buries the pig in the woods and installs security cameras around the property. He has to go back to Raleigh, but calls his sister, Lee, to come stay with Shelby. Lee and Shelby never really got along. Lee thought that Shelby was “fake; ” Shelby thought that Lee was selfish. In an out- of- place “flashback” (out of place for the style of show this season is taking), we learn about Lee’s troubled past. After getting a degree in criminal psychology, she became a cop and was on her way to making detective when she was injured on the job, and became addicted to painkillers. She was fired for taking them while on the beat, and soon after, her husband asked for a divorce and got custody of their child. Shelby is making dinner when she hears a noise. Foolishly she puts down her knife and goes to investigate. She finds nothing and returns to find her knife gone – it has been stabbed into the slab of meat she is cooking on the stove. Shelby is startled by Lee, who she blames for the knife trick. Lee asks Shelby to refrain from drinking wine in the house so that she doesn’t relapse. She assures Shelby she may no longer have her badge. Then one night, she wakes to Generic Spooky Noises, and a wine bottle rolls into her room. Thinking it was Shelby messing with her, Lee confronts her, and the two launch into a yelling match. It is around this time that Matt gets an alert on his cell phone. The security camera sensors were triggered, and on the video, he sees people in costume carrying torches towards the house. Matt calls home frantically, but both Shelby and Lee are too absorbed in their fight to notice the phone call – or the shadowy figures that pass by the window carrying torches. With his faith in the police squelched, Matt rushes home. The ladies stop arguing when Lee hears a creak. Someone is in the house. Lee starts to investigate, Shelby close on her heel, afraid to be alone. They go into the basement, where a dim light glows and painful moaning can be heard. All they find is a TV playing old home movies taken in the forest. The cameraman says “it is close, I can smell it” and finds a man in a pig mask dancing in the woods. The cameraman is next crying, on the ground, before the video cuts to black. Suddenly the lights in the basement go out, and the women discover they are locked in. Shadowy footsteps pass by the tiny basement windows and make stomping noises on the floor above. They are in the house. Shelby suspects they were in the basement for 2. Then everything is quiet, and they go upstairs. Lee and Shelby find dozens of long, thin tree branches stretched across the foyer. Hanging from the branches are hundreds of crude wooden dolls, not unlike those seen in The Blair Witch Project. Matt gets home after the cops have come and gone. They chalked it up to vandalism, which is about what Matt expects from them. He watches the video and thinks it’s a fake from the hillbillies. Matt thinks they are just trying to scare them into leaving, and Shelby is fine with that. She wants to leave, now. Lee and Matt both believe they shouldn’t be driven out of their own home. Shelby storms out of the house and drives off into the night. Matt calls Shelby, but as she answers, she looks away and slams into a woman on the road who came out of nowhere. Ignoring Matt, Shelby stumbles from her car, looking desperately for the woman in old- timey colonist clothes. She sees the victim head off into the woods and follows. Not 5. 0 feet into the woods, and the woman disappears. Then Shelby realizes she can’t find her way out. She hears a noise and hurries towards it, hoping for help, but instead she finds hundreds more primitive stick dolls. Shelby runs in fear, trips, and realizes the ground is breathing. Like she fell onto the chest of a sleeping giant, the ground in all directions heaves up and down. She runs some more, and sees torches. The colonists are there, forming a circle. Another colonist runs from the woods, screaming, with the top of his head cut off. Shelby screams, and the episode cuts to black. Disney/Pixar’s Finding Dory finaled at $135.1M, still the highest opening for an animated film at the domestic B.O. His personal net worth is estimated to be more than $3 billion. Three years later, the family moved to Phoenix, Arizona. I was embarrassed by the outward perception of my parents' Jewish practices. I was never really ashamed to be Jewish, but I was uneasy at times. He said yes, and I got an idea to do a Western. I made it and got my merit badge. That was how it all started. That motivated him to make 1. The film was made for $5. He attained the rank of Eagle Scout. His parents divorced while he was still in school. His long- term goal was to become a film director. His three sisters and mother remained in Saratoga. In Los Angeles, he applied to the University of Southern California's film school, but was turned down because of his . Studio vice president Sidney Sheinberg was impressed by the film, which had won a number of awards, and offered Spielberg a seven- year directing contract. It made him the youngest director ever to be signed for a long- term deal with a major Hollywood studio. It was immediately obvious to me, and probably everyone else, that here was a young genius. I thought maybe more experience was important, but then I thought of all of those experienced directors who didn't have Steven's intuitive inspiration and who just kept repeating the same old routine performances. Hollywood doesn't always recognize talent, but Steven's was not going to be overlooked. I told him so in a note I wrote him. I wrote to Rod Serling, too. I was so grateful that he had approved Steven as the director. I told him he had been totally right. The episode is unusual in his body of work, in that the camerawork is more highly stylized than his later, more . After this, and an episode of Marcus Welby, M. D., Spielberg got his first feature- length assignment: an episode of The Name of the Game called . This futuristic science fiction episode impressed Universal Studios and they signed him to a short contract. He did another segment on Night Gallery and did some work for shows such as Owen Marshall: Counselor at Law and The Psychiatrist, before landing the first series episode of Columbo (previous episodes were actually TV films). Based on the strength of his work, Universal signed Spielberg to do four TV films. The first was a Richard Matheson adaptation called Duel. The film is about a psychotic Peterbilt 2. Dennis Weaver) of a small Plymouth Valiant and tries to run him off the road. Special praise of this film by the influential British critic Dilys Powell was highly significant to Spielberg's career. Another TV film (Something Evil) was made and released to capitalize on the popularity of The Exorcist, then a major best- selling book which had not yet been released as a film. He fulfilled his contract by directing the TV film- length pilot of a show called Savage, starring Martin Landau. Spielberg's debut full- length feature film was The Sugarland Express, about a married couple who are chased by police as the couple tries to regain custody of their baby. Spielberg's cinematography for the police chase was praised by reviewers, and The Hollywood Reporter stated that . Zanuck and David Brown offered Spielberg the director's chair for Jaws, a thriller- horror film based on the Peter Benchley novel about an enormous killer shark. Spielberg has often referred to the gruelling shoot as his professional crucible. Despite the film's ultimate, enormous success, it was nearly shut down due to delays and budget over- runs. But Spielberg persevered and finished the film. It was an enormous hit, winning three Academy Awards (for editing, original score and sound) and grossing more than $4. It also set the domestic record for box office gross, leading to what the press described as . One of the rare films both written and directed by Spielberg, Close Encounters was a critical and box office hit, giving Spielberg his first Best Director nomination from the Academy as well as earning six other Academy Awards nominations. It won Oscars in two categories (Cinematography, Vilmos Zsigmond, and a Special Achievement Award for Sound Effects Editing, Frank E. This second blockbuster helped to secure Spielberg's rise. His next film, 1. World War II farce, was not nearly as successful and though it grossed over $9. Columbia and Universal) it was seen as a disappointment, mainly with the critics. For this, Spielberg fixed some of the flaws he thought impeded the original 1. Columbia, and as a condition of Spielberg revising the film, shot additional footage showing the audience the interior of the mothership seen at the end of the film (a decision Spielberg would later regret as he felt the interior of the mothership should have remained a mystery). Nevertheless, the re- release was a moderate success, while the 2. DVD release of the film restored the original ending. Next, Spielberg teamed with Star Wars creator and friend George Lucas on an action adventure film, Raiders of the Lost Ark, the first of the Indiana Jones films. The archaeologist and adventurer hero Indiana Jones was played by Harrison Ford (whom Lucas had previously cast in his Star Wars films as Han Solo). The film was considered an homage to the cliffhanger serials of the Golden Age of Hollywood. It became the biggest film at the box office in 1. Oscar nominations including Best Director (Spielberg's second nomination) and Best Picture (the second Spielberg film to be nominated for Best Picture). Raiders is still considered a landmark example of the action- adventure genre. The film also led to Ford's casting in Ridley Scott's Blade Runner. It was the story of a young boy and the alien he befriends, who was accidentally left behind by his companions and is attempting to return home. It was also nominated for nine Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director. Between 1. 98. 2 and 1. Spielberg produced three high- grossing films: Poltergeist (for which he also co- wrote the screenplay), a big- screen adaptation of The Twilight Zone (for which he directed the segment . Teaming up once again with Lucas and Ford, the film was plagued with uncertainty for the material and script. This film and the Spielberg- produced Gremlins led to the creation of the PG- 1. In spite of this, Temple of Doom is rated PG by the MPAA, even though it is the darkest and, possibly, most violent Indy film. Nonetheless, the film was still a huge blockbuster hit in 1. It was on this project that Spielberg also met his future wife, actress Kate Capshaw. In 1. 98. 5, Spielberg released The Color Purple, an adaptation of Alice Walker's Pulitzer Prize- winning novel of the same name, about a generation of empowered African- American women during depression- era America. Starring Whoopi Goldberg and future talk- show superstar Oprah Winfrey, the film was a box office smash and critics hailed Spielberg's successful foray into the dramatic genre. Roger Ebert proclaimed it the best film of the year and later entered it into his Great Films archive. The film received eleven Academy Award nominations, including two for Goldberg and Winfrey. However, much to the surprise of many. Ballard's autobiographical novel Empire of the Sun, starring John Malkovich and a young Christian Bale. The film garnered much praise from critics and was nominated for several Oscars, but did not yield substantial box office revenues. Reviewer Andrew Sarris called it the best film of the year and later included it among the best films of the decade. Once again teaming up with Lucas and Ford, Spielberg also cast actor Sean Connery in a supporting role as Indy's father. The film earned generally positive reviews and was another box office success, becoming the highest- grossing film worldwide that year; its total box office receipts even topped those of Tim Burton's much- anticipated film Batman, which had been the bigger hit domestically. Also in 1. 98. 9, he re- united with actor Richard Dreyfuss for the romantic comedy- drama Always, about a daredevil pilot who extinguishes forest fires. Spielberg's first romantic film, Always was only a moderate success and had mixed reviews. In 1. 99. 1, Spielberg directed Hook, about a middle- aged Peter Pan, played by Robin Williams, who returns to Neverland. Despite innumerable rewrites and creative changes coupled with mixed reviews, the film proved popular with audiences, making over $3. In 1. 99. 3, Spielberg returned to the adventure genre with the film version of Michael Crichton's novel Jurassic Park, about a theme park with genetically engineered dinosaurs. With revolutionary special effects provided by friend George Lucas's Industrial Light & Magic company, the film would eventually become the highest- grossing film of all time (at the worldwide box office) with $9. This would be the third time that one of Spielberg's films became the highest- grossing film ever. Spielberg's next film, Schindler's List, was based on the true story of Oskar Schindler, a man who risked his life to save 1,1. Jews from the Holocaust. With the film a huge success at the box office, Spielberg used the profits to set up the Shoah Foundation, a non- profit organization that archives filmed testimony of Holocaust survivors. In 1. 99. 7, the American Film Institute listed it among the 1. Greatest American Films ever Made (#9) which moved up to (#8) when the list was remade in 2. |
